Hauk is determined to keep Jolie from harm. But when the Order of Ananke ambushes them with a new weapon that neutralizes Hauk, making him vulnerable, it’s Jolie who must tap into her hidden strengths to rescue him—or risk losing him forever…

Review:
I have been waiting impatiently for this book to pop up on NetGalley so I could snap it up! I loved the story from the first book. I enjoy a beauty and beast story and this one was more engaging than most for me; maybe because our beast is really physically deformed from a fire five years ago. The world building in this series is not as strong as it could be, but it is still interesting. More is explained from the previous book, so the world is now stronger than it was. I am glad the author worked on that. I’m still not entirely sure why the Underlight shuns a lot of modern technology, but hey, it’s at least interesting.

Jolie is a modern woman that gets dragged into the Underlight world, literally. In the first book Hauk while in his rage state threw Jolie on his shoulder while she was unconscious and brought her to his home in the Underlight. That one moved changed the rest of her life. In this book she is a recruit for the Underlight and is working for the greater good, against her very powerful father. As a recruit she spends a lot of time with Hauk training, she finds that Hauk has become her best friend, but she has ever forgotten that kiss! Jolie struggles with her feelings in this book. Hauk is her best friend and she thinks that is all she feels for him until someone from his past shows up, which starts stirring up a whole lot of feelings she doesn’t know what to do with. It was amusing watching Jolie struggle with what she is feeling and her jealously certainly brings out a smile or two. I think Ms. Garren was right on with how someone would feel while they are struggling to come to terms with being just friends to possibly more. In the midst of Jolie trying to figure out her feelings, Hauk is kidnapped. And this time it is Jolie’s turn to kick some butt, take some names and rescue her man/friend/beast. And I have to say she does a bad a$$ job rescuing him! I love a girl that does the rescuing!

I adore Hauk! He has had so much pain, while he was an Army Ranger he was in a fire approximately five years ago, which took his leg and he has scars on 80% of his body, he never should have survived everyone else in the fire didn’t. Hauk can no longer go out in public, when he is seen he is gawked at for his hideous scared face. Most of his nose is gone, one ear gone, half of the other, no hair with tattoos and piercings. So many people can’t see past the appearance to see the man beneath. And the man beneath is beautiful. He believes in the greater good, he is self-sacrificing and inspires loyalty in others. Jolie is one of those that he inspired loyalty, but he wants more than her loyalty. He wants everything from her. He knows what he looks like and though he thought he has come to terms with that we find that maybe he is harboring more insecurities than even he knows about. Even though he doesn’t truly believe that he could win Jolie as his, he goes contemplates going for it anyway which shows that courage he is known for. You truly do root for Hauk, for all that he does, and he deserves happiness too!

I really enjoy this series so far. I really do recommend that you give it a try. The books aren’t very long and easy to get through.
