FF: Whats your bookish Pet Peeve?

Follow Friday!

If you are new to the #FF fun, Feature & Follow Friday is a blog hop that expands your blog following by a joint effort between bloggers. Feature & Follow Friday is now hosted by TWO hosts, myself of course and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it’ll allow us to show off more new blogs!

How does this work? First you leave your name here on this post, then you create a post on your own blog that links back to this post (easiest way is to just grab the code under the #FF picture and put it in your post) and then you visit as many blogs as you can and tell them “hi” in their comments (on the post that has the #FF image). You follow them, they follow you. Win. Win. Just make sure to follow back if someone follows you!

Now to make this #FF interesting we do a FEATURE blogger. If you are interested in becoming a Feature click on the drop down link above FEATURES &; Follow Friday and get on the waiting list! It is also required, that if you participate you must follow the hosts (Parajunkee & Alison Can Read) and the two Feature blogs.

Q: What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to books? Maybe you don’t like love triangles or thin plots? Tell us about it!

Inconsistencies within a book/series: What do I mean by this you ask? Its when an author messes up their own details, it drives me nuts! If I can catch that mistake why can’t you (who wrote the book), your editor, and all the other people who read the book between rough draft and publication. I mean seriously how many people read a book before its actually published? And no one could spot it?

Some examples (This may or may not be real examples that I have seen) : In a series one of the supporting characters in one book is assaulted by a knife and then in the same book when said assault is brought up again all of the sudden the assault weapon is now a gun.  What happened to the knife?

Time lines and ages: You at some part they age of a character say they are 30 for example, but then later you say so and so meet on that fateful day when character A and character B were only 5, now 10 years later they are still the best of friends. Huh? What happened to the 5 years? Wouldn’t that make them 25 not 30? Or book 1 was at the end of its journey and an 2 events happened within say 1 day of each other, a major injury of Character A and a wedding of Characters B and C. So the next book in the series starts and major injury to Character A still happens when it happens but all of the sudden the wedding of Characters B and C took place a week after the injury of Character A. What happened to 1 day?

You would think that someone would catch these things. Real life example I was reading an ARC and there was this scene a pretty hot one at that, but the author had the guy removing his shirt twice. At the beginning the hot and heavy and then again like a page later. Not that I mind a man removing his shirt more than once as long as there are some 6-pack abs under there. LOL

Some authors jack up their own details so often and so badly I start to wonder if they think their readers are stupid and that we wouldn’t notice, or if the author really just doesn’t care enough about their own work to pay attention to the details.

Ok rant over! Can you tell it annoys the crap out of me?

New Rant: Wishy Washy characters. Make up your damn mind!! And where there is a wishy washy character it is almost always a female. Man, do you love him or not??

  1. Old Follower. I completely agree authors need to pay attention to their own details and characters need to be strong and not undecided. =]

  4. *n0ds* Yeah I have to agree with you! that sucks when you pick it up and wonder why the author was so lazy

  5. I agree! It's so hard though when you've read the book about a gazillion times not to get confused by your own momentum. I personally jot down dates and details in a separate book to refer back to so this doesn't happen, but we all make mistakes.
By the way, just read your comment on my blog. 'Syrup?' Seriously? That is the grossest thing I have ever heard. - Following you back!

  8. glad I'm not the only one who gets irritated w/ the wishy washy characters, LOL. I'm with you on the inconsistencies though, I always think I read it wrong at first, and it takes me some time to try to analyze the inconsistency, I know, I'm bad.... anyhow, thanks for stopping by my FF today! 11. Lol, I totally understand where you are coming from. Something else that peeves me - when they get their characters names all mixed up. So now, you're flipping pages back and forth confusing yourself and your kindle because it has NO IDEA what page you want to stick on...trying to figure out who said what and who it's supposed to be intended to.

Anyways, thanks for following me. I'm here to follow you back. Lovely website :0)

  12. Ahh! I also hate when an author is unable to keep her story straight. Charlaine Harris does this and it drives me nuts! http://ohpaperpages.blogspot.com/

  13. That is also my pet peeve! I hate it when the details are changed to something else.

  14. Oooh, yes! Great point on the authors messing up details in a series. Ya think they'd know their own books by heart! Hmm...

  15. I agree! Inconsistencies that obvious ruin the story for me! You wrote the book and created the characters, you should be able to keep the facts straight. Fact checking is key especially in lengthy series!

  16. Great points! I didn't even think of the detail mess-up but I totally agree. It's annoying when either numbers or other details are messed up!

  17. I hate catching these type of things! I'm not the world's most observant person either, so when I do catch it, you know it's a HUGE oversight on someone's part!!

  20. Removing their shirt twice?! Lol! Maybe once wasn't enough for him? I'm imagining it slow matrix style. xDD

I totally agree about inconsistencies. The Southern Vampire Mysteries has sooo many, but it's my guilty pleasure. *sigh*

  21. LOL! Nice rant;) But I totally agree! Thankfully I haven't come across any (yet), but I see it a lot in movies/shows and it pisses me off. It's just lazy on the writer's part.

    Following back:)

  22. I completely agree with you about inconsistencies! One of my favorite series has quite a lot and it bugs me not knowing which set of details to go by.

  23. Inconsistencies bother me too!

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I'm a new follower :)

  24. Amen! I completely agree with you! To me, that definitely falls under bad editing. I can understand having inconsistencies in a novel; however, the editor needs to pick that up when reading the book. The fact that it goes to print that way is completely unprofessional!

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I'm returning the follow ^_~
