#FF – Step outside your box

YAY I’m being social today!!  Go me!

Gain new followers and make new friends with the Book Blogger Feature & Follow! If this is your first time here, welcome! You are about to make some new friends and gain new followers — but you have to know — the point of this hop is to follow other bloggers also. I follow you, you follow me.

The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee’s View and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it’ll allow us to show off more new blogs!
How does this work? First you leave your name here on this post, (using the linky tools — keep scrolling!) then you create a post on your own blog that links back to this post (easiest way is to just grab the code under the #FF picture and put it in your post) and then you visit as many blogs as you can and tell them “hi” in their comments (on the post that has the #FF image). You follow them, they follow you. Win. Win. Just make sure to follow back if someone follows you!

What sets this Hop apart from others, is our Feature. Each week we will showcase a Featured Blogger, from all different genres and areas. Who is our Feature today? Find out below. Just remember it is required, if you participate, to follow our Features and you must follow the hosts (Parajunkee & Alison Can Read) as a courtesy. How do you follow someone? Well, if you have a preference, state it in your #FF post. A lot of blogs are transitioning to WordPress in which they do not have the luxury of GFC, so an RSS subscription is appreciated or if you choose an email subscription. If you don’t have GFC please state in your post how you would like to be followed.

Q: Jumping Genres: Ever pick up a book from a genre you usually don’t like and LOVE it? Tell us about it and why you picked it up in the first place.

A: I don’t usually read Young Adult, I didn’t even read much YA even as a teenager, I was already reading Adult Fiction by then. So when people kept hounding me to read Cassandra Clares Mortal Instruments, I was skeptical to say the least. I didn’t think I could handle anymore insecure, immature teenagers running around.  So, I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the Mortal Instruments as much as I did. Clary didn’t annoy me to the point where I wanted to reach through the book and slap her, not like other heroine of another widely popular YA turned movie franchise. I ended up liking all of the characters for the most part.  Clare even broaches controversial subject matter which could have gone horribly wrong, but she approaches it with maturity and pulls it off tremendously.

I also, enjoyed the Hunger Games Trilogy quite immensely. When I was reading this series it didn’t feel like YA though, I kept forgetting that the cast of characters were teenagers. They certainly didn’t act it, but due to their circumstances they didn’t have the luxury of being teenagers, they had to grow up way before their years.

  1. It used to turn me off when I heard something was YA because, though it stands for young ADULT, it seemed like teen literature to me. So I understand where you're coming from - I, as and adult, would rather read adult fiction aka books with nookie in them LOL. But ugh, don't you LOVE the plots these YA authors come up with though? I'm so glad we caved, LOL.

I'm here to follow you back so thanks for commenting on my blog :0)

  2. I, too, started reading adult fiction at a young age. I remember going to the library and getting stacks of Harlequins! lol

  11. YA tends to be hit and miss with me. I always get stuck on crappy characterization and the ever-prevalent sexist undertones. Even though I'm a teen, I really don't think I'm a part of the YA target audience, haha.

    Thanks for hopping through!

  18. I'm the same way: not a fan of YA in general. The stories just aren't edgy enough for me. I'm not totally opposed to it, though, because every once in a great while, something fantastic like Hunger Games comes along. I haven't read the Mortal Instruments (I think I'm one of the few on the planet who haven't yet) but it's on my TBR list. New follower, btw. Happy Friday! :D

  20. I was also pleasantly surprised by The Hunger Games, but I also don't read YA all that much. I'm not sure why, but I've just never really gravitated toward that genre of book.

  44. I always had the opposite problem - too much YA and children's fiction, virtually no adult fiction, haha. I agree on the Hunger Games, though. I read it back before it got popular, and it was amazing. I had thought it would be over-dramatic, but I'd read other books by Suzanne Collins and I decided to give it a chance. :D

  48. I read adult books as a teen and now I read YA books as an adult. Weird, right? I just really like the pacing and the imagination, although I do spend a good amount of time wanting to slap the teenage protagonists. And I've only read City of Bones, but I can see its appeal.

  59. I didn't read YA books as a kid- my dad thought that once I could read well enough to read adult (real) books, there was no point to reading baby books anymore. But when I became a teacher, I started reading YA to make sure that my students' book reports were accurate and not faked. That's when I began to appreciate it. Thanks for stopping by my blog and following- following you through GFC.

  60. I read 99% YA, and I agree with your points. More often than not, the female protagonist is a whiny little girl. But that makes it even more special when she isn't.
