Review: Jeaniene Frost - One Grave At A Time

Night Huntress Series:
Book 6:
One Grave At A Time: Cat and Bones
Summary:
After the last battle against Apollyon in the grave yard, things finally look like they are calming down for Cat and Bones. When a ghost approaches Cat with the tale about how she died and how her murderer Heinrich Kramer a witch hunter of old is a ghost who never gave up his murdering ways. Each year on All Hollows Eve he can take physical form and he rapes and burns three female “witches” at the stake. Cat and Bones decide to take on the ghost Catherines ghostly tormentor. But how do you kill a murderous ghost? This time Cat and Bones ay have taken on the undefeatable.
Review:
I love my Cat and Bones and supporting characters! Jeaniene Frost is one of the most consistent authors in this genre and she scored another winner with this book. Ghosts are a refreshing change from the normal, there aren’t that many books in the paranormal genre where ghosts are a central focus especially not murderous ghosts. Along with the Kramer plat line there is a new thorn in Cats side, the new director of her old team. For some reason he is fixated on Cat and almost got them all killed. I am interested to see how this will turn out in future books. He seems like he’s going to be a major pain in Cat and Bones arses. What I also like about J. Frost is that her characters are not stagnating, they grow. You can definitely tell how Cat has matured especially in this book she trusts in her relationship with Bones and has come to realize that together they are stronger and not to leave Bones behind “for his safety”. This is touching to read, because she could be pretty bratty in past books. The biggest problem I had with this book was that my beloved Vlad was not in it! So sad! He’s my favorite, but he’s getting his own series so I guess I can live with him being missing from this book.

Review: Jeaniene Frost - Eternal Kiss of Darkness

World Huntress Series:
Book 2:
Eternal Kiss of Darkness: Mencheres and Kira Graceling
Summary:
Mencheres was ready to end it all, after over 4000 years of existence he was ready to move past this world into the next. All of his visions showed nothing but a black void and he knows his time is up. One night Mencheres attacked by some ghouls and they were in the middle of ripping into him when a young human woman risks her life to save his. Kira rushes into an old abandoned warehouse where she could hear sounds of an attack, despite all good judgment she rushes into the warehouse. What she sees is impossible! The ghouls attack Kira and she is on the verge of death, Mencheres knows he has to save her so he scoops her up feeds her some of his blood and takes her to his house. When Mencheres tries to erase her memories he realizes he can’t get into her head, not sure what to do he decides to keep her in residence a bit longer. Kira is having a hard time wrapping her head around the fact that there are vampires, ghouls and other things that go bump I the night. Kira doesn’t like that she is being held at Mencheres’s house but she finds herself not minding the company all that much. Finally Mencheres realizes that he can no longer keep Kira against her will and takes her back to the human world with knowledge of all the things she should know nothing about. Even after Kira is gone, Mencheres knows he should be paying more attention to the threat of his arch nemesis that is hanging over his head, but he finds himself following Kira around instead. Kira can’t get Mencheres out of her head, one night in her attempt to find him she stumbles upon more vampires that take and start torturing her, in desperation she gives Mencheres name. When Mencheres arrives Kira is not in good shape, but is he too late?
Review:
You really cannot go wrong with a J. Frost novel. Frost knows how to pull you into a novel and not let you go until you have reached the conclusion. Throughout the Night Huntress series I found Mencheres intriguing, and I am so glad he got his own novel. Mencheres is a complicated character; he is over 4000 years old and probably the most powerful vampire in existence. Mencheres has made a lot of hard decisions that he wasn’t necessarily proud of, several of which hurt people he cared about. He is tired of life and his guilt is eating at him. Kira is his perfect counterpart. She believes in him and helps him realize that his decisions in the bigger picture and in the long term were the best and everyone makes mistakes; but more than that she gives him a reason to live. Kira is incredibly resilient she takes everything that is thrown at her and tries to make the best of any given situation. She is a strong capable woman! Oh and you get to see a lot of my man Vlad which is an extra bonus for me in this novel! Remember I called him, he’s my book boyfriend! LOL!

Review: Jeaniene Frost - First Drop of Crimson

World Huntress:
Book 1:
First Drop of Crimson: Spade AKA Charles and Denise
Summary:
New Year’s Eve night over a year ago (Night huntress 3 – At Graves End) Denise and her husband decided to spend New Years with the undead only to be attacked by Zombies, where her husband Randy was killed. Since then Denise has been avoiding all things Underworld including her best friend Cat who is half human and half vampire. When a demon shows up at Denise’s door she realizes that she needs some undead help and not wanting to drag Cat into this. The only other vampire she has access to is Spade who is Bones best friend. Spade agrees to help only because he doesn’t think anything is really wrong and he doesn’t want to disturb Bones if he can handle it and if he was honest with himself he wouldn’t mind seeing Denise once more. Ever since Spade’s human girlfriend was killed over a hundred years ago he has avoided attachments to humans, but ever since he saw Denise that New Year’s night he has felt a pull to her. So when she called him he was pleasantly surprised, if not a little concerned for her sanity, she has had a rough time of it lately. When Spade gets to Denise’s place he realizes they have a real problem on their hands, this Demon is not going to give up Denise and what he wants to Denise to accomplish easily. Against his better judgment Spade agrees to help Denise. Denise wishes she could just stay out of the underworld, she just wants to be a regular girl that doesn’t know anything about vampires, ghouls or demons, but yet again she is being dragged into the underworld and this time it is her life on the line.
Review:
I really enjoyed this book! I always liked Spade and am so glad he got his own book. In previous books he was always the one counseling Cat and Bones when they were fighting, always the voice of reason. Now, Spade is the one knee deep in emotions and dealing with a human female and he’s like a fish out of water. It’s really quite amusing to see the tables turned on him. Denise has a core made of steel, she has had a very traumatic time of it lately but somehow she has managed to keep her sanity. After the deaths of her husband and three of her cousins and now has a demon threatening to kill her, I don’t know how she keeps it together with only a little PTSD. Both Spade and Denise have to dig in deep into their emotions and their pasts to make this work and sometimes it looks like there is no way these two can make it work, but somehow they manage to circle back to each other. But for how long? Spade needs her to be a vampire or something with an elongated life span (He won’t survive losing her so soon after being with her and a few decades is a blink of the eye for him) and Denise refuses to turn into a vampire, is there any way it can work?
If you haven’t read at least through the 2nd preferably the 4th Night Huntress before reading this book I would highly recommend it. You don’t have to but a lot may not make much sense if you haven’t. And if you haven’t stated reading the Night Huntress series you really should anyway because it’s such a great series!

Review: Jeaniene Frost - This Side of the Grave

Night Huntress Series:
Book 5:
This Side of the Grave: Cat and Bones and the usual supporting cast
Summary:
Having just battled Cat’s now dead ex-husband Cat and Bones just want some time to themselves but a new but old threat is keeping them from any down time. Apollyon is a power hungry Ghoul who uses Cats existence and “powers” to try to incite a war between the Vampires and the Ghouls. Cat doesn’t take to kindly to being used as an excuse for a war where thousands can lose their lives. Cat and Bones are trying to head off this new threat becomes it becomes an all out war like Apollyon tried once before several hundred years earlier with another half breed and they are going to need all the help they can get, even if Cat has to “borrow” more powers.
Review:
As usual J. Frost delivers in her Night Huntress series! This series is one of the most consistently good series I have read, each book is action packed and keeps you glued to each page. This particular book is more emotional than some of the other books in the series. Cat goes a little deeper into her emotions, she is really starting to come into her own, be more self aware and not be afraid of who she is and what she feels. It’s easy for people to call Cat immature but for all intents and purposes she is very young (at not even 30) especially to her vampire counter parts. J. Frost again kills off one of the main supporting characters, but I think I am starting to come around on that. I’m actually starting to think that it’s pretty cool that Frost is not afraid to kill off one of her “good guys” , I think there is a method to her madness and it’s not a senseless killing. I have read some other series where there are big battles and the “good guys” don’t have any main causalities, where it’s nice not to lose those characters it’s also a bit unrealistic. This book also features a lot of Vlad who quickly became my Night Huntress book boyfriend! I claimed him, so he’s mine! You all can have Bones, but I want Vlad. LOL! I heard a rumor that Vlad is going to have his own series and I’m hoping that is true. You also see the return of a character from the first book and another shocking surprise. J. Frost definitely keeps the reader on their toes! This is another must read!

Review: Jeaniene Frost - Destined For An Early Grave

Night Huntress:

Book 4:
Destined For An Early Grave: Cat and Bones plus the Usual Suspects
Summary:
Kat is a hot commodity, years ago a master vampire Gregor had a vision of Kat and Bones together and became obsessed with her and making her his rather than Bones. Mencheres (Bones, grandsire) saw the same vision and was obsessed with keeping the visions integrity. Gregor does manage to take Kat when she is 16 and she spent a month with her. Mencheres manages to capture Gregor and get Cat back and has to bury her memory so deep that she can’t remember a thing of that month. Now, 12 years later Gregor has managed to get free and is claiming that Cat is his wife, which according to vampire laws means that Cat belongs to Gregor and not Bones. This claim threatens to tear the vampire world apart and Bone and Gregor are on the verge of war. Not only does this threaten the vampire world but is tearing Kat and Bones apart and their marriage and love may not make it past this new threat if they even survive Gregors new threat.
Review:
Jeanine Frost so far has not disappointed in previous books and she sure doesn’t in this one as well. I didn’t like this one as much as the previous three books, but this is still an excellent book. Frost knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat and keep the plot moving along. She throws you some curve balls that have your jaw dropping.  Now one of the reasons this is not one of my favorites is one of my favorite characters meets an untimely demise and I’m not so happy about that, but what can you do. I assume Frost has a reason for letting that character go, but it doesn’t mean I have to be happy about it. LOL! All of the usual suspects show up in this book as well and it’s good to have them all back!

Review: Jeaniene Frost – At Grave’s End

Night Huntress:

Book 3:
At Grave’s End:

Summary:
An all-out Vampire War has broken out. Bones and Mencheres team up against Patra; Mencheres estranged wife and daughter of Cleopatra. All vampires must pick a side and hope it’s the right one. There will be causalities on both sides and likely no one will be the same afterwards.

Review:
Holy crap! This book reads like a high octane action movie! So much happened that I can’t even remember what happened in the beginning. I do remember the books starts with an action and doesn’t let up from there, it only builds. There are two turnings, numerous fight scenes. You will laugh, you will cry, you will sit on the edge of your seat maybe even chew off some of your nails. All I can really say is WOW! If you have not started reading this series you need to. You won’t be disappointed and I think so far this is my favorite of the series.

Review: Jeaniene Frost - One Foot in the Grave

Night Huntress:

Book 2:
One Foot in the Grave:

Summary:
Four years after the conclusion of Halfway to the Grave, this story starts. Cat has been head of her elite team kicking vampire’s arses. It has been four years seen she has seen Bones and every day is as painful as the day before, that is how bad she misses him but knows she made the right decision. One of her jobs brings her before a powerful vampire named Liam, he is not her usual type mark, but he’ll do. Upon kicking his butt with a stake in next to his heart one twist will finish him. He says one thing and Cat realizes she has Bones sire in her hands. She can’t bring herself to kill the man that made Bones so she lets him go, not know that was a HUGE mistake. Now she has Ian, Bones and her father hunting her down. How did a girl get so popular?

Review:
The series continues right in the footsteps of the last novel, it is none stop entertainment! J. Frost has such a sarcastic and smart a$$ sense of humor. I love it! It’s a sense of humor I can understand. There is so much action going on in the novel with twist and turns as well as passion you don’t have time to get bored, it just keeps coming. Cat is one of the most kick a$$ females in a series, and sees non-stop action. I’m trying to think and I can only think of the Kresley Cole females from her IAD series that kick as much a$$ as Cat. (I am sure there are more but I can’t think of ant off the top of my head) Bones is of course Bones! I don’t know how else to explain him except he’s Bones: all man, a bit scary, powerful, ruthless, and incredibly loving and loyal to his woman. Each of the men in Cat’s team have their distinct personalities and just because they are secondary characters they are not left out. I’m really glad I jumped on the band wagon.

Review: Jeaniene Frost - Halfway to the Grave

Night Huntress Novel:

Book 1:
Halfway to the Grave: Catherine Crawfield/ Cat and Bones

Summary:
Cat shouldn’t exist; she is a rare half breed. Half Vampire and Half Human, and all freak of nature. Her entire life she knew there was something different about herself, stronger, faster, glowing eyes, pale skin, but she didn’t know why until she was 16. That is when her mother told her she was raped by a vampire and 5 months later Cat was born. Since Cat found out she was half vampire she has been slaying any vampire she could get her hands on. She has always come out the victor, until Bones. Bones knows Cat is killing vampires but what he wants to know is who she is working for. He allows Cat to lure him out of the club and gets one up on her. When he finds out her secret that she is half vampire he realizes he can use her to his advantage, as he is tracking a vampire that is stealing young girls and selling them and he need bait that can handle themselves in a fight and he can’t use a vampire. As Bones and cat get closer to the culprit things get more and more intense and its likely they won’t be walking away from this job.

Review:
So yes, I succumbed to peer pressure and jumped on the Night Huntress band wagon and man am I glad I did! People were not exaggerating about how good it is. I know I’m only on the first book but it takes off running! It is go go go from the beginning and doesn’t let up. The characters are intense and dark and you will fall in love instantly. Bones will have you sigh with pleasure within minutes, a little scary and a whole lot of man with a delicious accent to boot. This series is technically not a romance and under the Urban Fantasy category but worry not my romantic friends there is a little something something, to keep you going. =)  Pick up this series you will not be disappointed you will fly right through this book and onto the next. That’s where I’m heading now, back to the books!
