Review: Beyond the Veil by Pippa DaCosta

Beyond the Veil: Muse

(The Veil #1)

Summary:
From Goodreads.com

If your ex is the Prince of Greed, you’d better be ready to raise Hell.

Charlie Henderson is living a lie. Her real name is Muse, she's half demon, and her attempt at a normal life is about to go up in smoke.

When an assassin walks into her life, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake, Muse must return to the one man she hoped never to see again and ask for help. The Prince of Greed isn’t known for his charity. The price is high, and the cost could tear her apart.

Trapped between the malevolent intentions of a Prince of Hell and an assassin with ulterior motives, Muse must embrace the lure of chaos at her core—the demon inside her—in order to survive.

Review:
***This review contains slight spoilers***

You know I'm not really sure how I feel about this book. I know a lot of people are in love with this series and there are parts I like but I don't know if I'm in for the long haul.

What I liked:

The premise. There is a lot of potential here. The prequel set us up for what life is like in the demon side and it is not pretty. This book showed us what it could be like on the human side for a demon or halfling. Muse has a heap of potential to be seriously bad ass and a force to be reckoned with if only she would get her head out of her ass. There was plenty of action to keep the story moving. Explosions, hell hounds, demonic powers, etc.. So at least you aren't really bored.

What I didn't like:

There is this weird love triangle, is it really a triangle? In the beginning she has human Sam whom she loves. A minute later Muse is fucking around with Akil and half in love with him and the next she's fucking round with Stefan and in love with him. Then Akil and Stefan are both lying to her basically from the get go. Her lady parts seem to get aflame anytime there is a powerful demon around.

The whole thing was a bit confusing and convoluted. Muse seems to change her mind as often as she changes her underwear. She doesn't want to be a demon, she wants her demon, she hates demons, then she wants to help. She could have been totally badass but ended up just seeming weak and lead around by the "all knowing" males (Akil, Stefan, the Institute) in her life. I wanted her to grow a pair and think for herself for once.

And then the whole thing with Akil.. why now, why after 5 freak'n years is he all of the sudden making a play. It doesn't make any sense. Why now, what changed?

The institute: It was just thrown in there, I know what the role is supposed to be but they just come across as another "bad guy". They leave their people out to dry and don't give a shit. They blackmail Muse and steal her demon. Which I really didn't like. Why give all this power and then just chop it off. And the ending with the institute. So not a fan of that either.

I don't know if I'll read the second book in the series but it's not very high on my priorities.

Early Review: The Curse of Tenth Grave by Darynda Jones

The Curse of Tenth Grave: Charley Davidson and Reyes Farrow

(Charley Davidson #10)

The Curse of Tenth Grave by Darynda Jones

Expected publication: June 28th 2016

Summary:
From Goodreads.com

As a Part-time PI and fulltime grim reaper, Charley Davidson has asked a lot of questions throughout her life: Why can I see dead people? Who is the hot supernatural entity following me? How do I get gum out of my sister’s hair before she wakes up? But, “How do I trap not one malevolent god, but three?” was never among them. Until now. And since those gods are on earth to kill her daughter, she has little choice but to track them down, trap them, and cast them from this dimension.

There’s just one problem. One of the three stole her heart a very long time ago. Can the Razer, a god of absolute death and destruction, change his omniscient spots, or will his allegiances lie with his brothers?

Those are just a few of the questions Charley must answer, and quick. Add to that a homeless girl running for her life, an innocent man who’s been charged with murder, and a pendant made from god glass that has the entire supernatural world in an uproar, and Charley has her hands full. If she can manage to take care of the whole world-destroying-gods thing, we’re saved. If not, well…

Review:
I adore the Charley Davidson world.. It's one of my favorite urban fantasy series mostly due to its humor. This book picks up about a week after the last one left off. Charley is still doing her, taking cases, pissing people off and making people laugh.

In the last book her learned some disturbing information about her beloved Reyes... At first I was going to be pissed for her yet again leaving Reyes in the dark about something important, and she does, but she's smarter about it this time. So it feels like she's growing as a character and in maturity. Maybe motherhood has changed her. Beep is still a central theme in this book as they concentrate on keeping her safe. To do so, Charley has to trap at least two evil gods.. The third, remains up in the air on whether they are a true threat or not. At the end Charley makes a bold declaration which elevated her bad ass status. Overall, with all the other installments in this series we are taken on an entertaining roller coaster ride. I definitely recommend this series to anyone that likes to laugh.

Early Review: Forevermore by Kristen Callihan

Forevermore - St. John Evernight and Miss Layla Starling

(Darkest London #7)

Forevermore (Darkest London #7)

Summary:
Goodreads.com

Despite the fact that she is unfortunately American, she's received a staggering number of offers. And turned down every one. But he can not offer her happiness. He will never be normal, never be anything but a freak in her world. So St. John resolves to keep his distance, until he is recruited by the Society for the Suppression of Supernaturals to guard Layla. For she is in grave danger, and he is about to learn the full extent of his powers.

Review:
I am sad this is the last book in this wonderful series, it’s been one of my favorites since I first took a change on Firelight all those years ago.  Callihan is a master of her craft; she weaves wonderful tales blending the supernatural with the historical.  I’d say she is at the top of her genre and I hope that while this series is done she continues with another historical paranormal series.

My heart broke a little bit for Sin.. pobrecito. I really enjoyed his character would have liked to see more of his powers. I dont feel like we really got to see him go full out with them. But he was so cute with Layla and protective. I really love how they fell in love as teenagers and it withstood the test of time and life.

Layla was pretty awesome. She was fierce and she knew what she wanted (Sin) and she was not taking no for an answer. She knew he was for her and she went about getting him. i loved when she dragged Sin out to get some practical experience showed she was not willing to be a victim or let a man protect her when she could do it herself. In the end she was kicking some serious ass and I was quite proud of her.

We caught up a bit with past characters and got to see them end in a good place which is always nice since this is the last book in this series and I dont think there are any plans for a spin off. I'll be sad to leave this world but I know the characters are in a good place... =)

Review: Sweep in Peace by Ilona Andrews

Sweep in Peace: Dina Demille

(Innkeeper Chronicles #2)

Sweep in Peace (Innkeeper Chronicles #2)

Summary:

Dina DeMille doesn’t run your typical Bed and Breakfast. Her inn defies laws of physics, her fluffy dog is secretly a monster, and the only paying guest is a former Galactic tyrant with a price on her head. But the inn needs guests to thrive, and guests have been scarce, so when an Arbitrator shows up at Dina's door and asks her to host a peace summit between three warring species, she jumps on the chance.

Unfortunately, for Dina, keeping the peace between Space Vampires, the Hope-Crushing Horde, and the devious Merchants of Baha-char is much easier said than done. On top of keeping her guests from murdering each other, she must find a chef, remodel the inn...and risk everything, even her life, to save the man she might fall in love with. But then it's all in the day's work for an Innkeeper…

Review:
I’m a total Ilona Andrews fan girl, this is no secret. Whenever a new book comes out its on my auto-buy list. I haven’t read a single book by Ilona Andrews that I haven’t enjoyed.  This particular series is made available online in pieces on Ilona Andrews website. This in itself is super awesome and lets you know they care about their fans. That being said, I did start out reading this tale online as the pieces came out but stopped about halfway through so that when it was all done I could read it in one piece.. I was a day late and missed it being online for free so alas I had to wait until they prettied it up and released it as one piece. Was it worth the wait and the cost?! Absolutely!

So we are back with Dina, maybe 6 months ish after the last book. Sean had left the planet to see the universe and repay a debt. Arland aka Rapunzel (Seans nickname for him) left to join his House and now it’s just Dina and Caldenia in the house and no guests. When the Arbiter approaches Dina, she knows what she is about to undertake is very risky and dangerous but she needs this, not just for herself and the quest for her parents but for the inn itself.

The story is laced with typical Andrews’s humor/sarcasm. The description of Grumpy Cat about had me rolling.  Dina is participating an a peace talk among three factions that desperately want peace but their prides won’t permit it, on top of that there is a thief she must find and a temperamental chief in residence.   The pace of the book is steady and intriguing, there isn’t time to get bored not with all the preparations to be made and the three factions out to kill each other.  The end of the story when Dina has to interfere to get everyone on the same page is so deeply emotional and heartbreaking. George is a conniving asshole but he gets the job done. Caldenia has her typical wise insights and wisecracks and we get a new cat! (With no name) My only issue with this book is we didn’t get enough time with Sean, but im sure he’ll be featured in the next book whenever that one starts. I assume early next year.

Early Review: Sweet Ruin by Kresley Cole

Sweet Ruin by Kresley Cole
Rune the Baneblood and Josephine Doe

(Immortals After Dark #16)

Sweet Ruin (Immortals After Dark, #16)

Summary:
A foundling raised in a world of humans

Growing up, orphaned Josephine didn’t know who or what she was—just that she was “bad,” an outcast with strange powers. Her baby brother Thaddeus was as perfect as she was flawed; protecting him became her entire life. The day he was taken away began Jo’s transition from angry girl…to would-be superhero…to enchanting, ruthless villain.

A lethally sensual enforcer on a mission

A threat to the Møriør has brought archer Rune the Baneblood to the mortal realm to slay the oldest living Valkyrie. Whether by bow or in bed, he never fails to eliminate his target. Yet before he can strike, he encounters a vampiric creature whose beauty conceals a black heart. With one bite, she pierces him with aching pleasure, taking his forbidden blood—and jeopardizing the secrets of his brethren.

A boundless passion that will lead to sweet ruin…

Could this exquisite female be a spy sent by the very Valkyrie he hunts? Rune knows he must not trust Josephine, yet he’s unable to turn her away. Despite his millennia of sexual conquests, he can’t ignore the unfamiliar longing she arouses deep within him. When Jo betrays the identity of the one man she will die to protect, she and Rune become locked in a treacherous battle of wills that pits ultimate loyalty against unbridled lust.

Review:

It is no secret I am a Kresley Cole fan girl, but even a fan girl can admit when an author misses. Thankfully that has not occurred here and I continue in my deep abiding Kresley Cole worship!  We are now 16 books deep into the Immortals After Dark series, based on trends of other series past it should have gotten a bit stale by now, but Cole keeps pumping out hit! If anything the series keeps getting better! She continually surprises us and keeps the series fresh by not taking us where you think she is leading us. You think she is setting you up for one thing and bam, it’s you with something completely different. Like… two completely new characters we have never heard of!  Who does that, who introduces two brand new characters so late in a series when readers already have their favorites and have already been set up for a completely different set of lovers? (Think back to Munro and his gypsy that we were set up for 2 books ago) But here we are, and count on Kresley Cole to make it work.  Now I know I saw some outraged fans, thinking there are so many other characters that deserve to have their happily ever after, but keep your faith fans! Has Kresley Cole ever let you down? I know she hasn’t for me.

So why is this book so great, you ask? Why do these newbies deserve their happily ever after? Well as we all know Cole has been leading us into the Ascension and into possible Apocalypse and the Møriør is leading us there… Or are they?  Rune is a member of the Møriør but he’s not particularly evil. Maybe misunderstood and a total manwhore which after his stint as an actual whore is not all that surprising.  He’s 7000 years old which I think is one of the oldest main characters we have encountered thus far, but like the other immortals he’s kept up with the times.  He’s been dispatched by the Møriør leader to assassinate our beloved Nix and he’s trolling Nola to find her.

Josephine is a young’n in her early 20’s, but her earliest memory is when she is eight and she doesn’t remember anything before then. She wakes up in the ghetto with her infant brother and knows she is now responsible for him. Jo is incredibly snarky with an ego a mile wide and has an obsession with being a superhero and at the tender age of I think 11 she takes on a local gang only to be shot in the face. She wakes up in the morgue with bullets in her face and her little brother in the care of a librarian. She believes herself a ghost who can incorporate and for the next decade or so has no idea what the heck she is. But she keeps her superhero obsession and is the protector of prostitutes and she ghosts into shells (living bodies) to feel a connection with people. Now she is in Nola and when she meets Rune she meets another freak like herself and she needs to know more. Instinct kicks in and she is compelled to snack on Rune’s tasty blood and he becomes hooked!  He’s a Banesblood and his blood is poison to every being except another Banesblood (Think Natalya Reigns roommate on the island of hell) so when Jo drinks and doesn’t die he knows he’s got to keep her around. From here we go on a rollercoaster ride of action, orgasm denial, a battle of wills, combat situations, lots of nymphs, and chasing down Nix. It’s a fantastic ride to be on! Oh and speaking of Nix, we get to see some of her other awesome powers besides her foresight and man does she kick some ass! Who knew she had it in her. Get ready for one of the best books in the series! Now go forth and pre-order if you are reading this before its out.

ARC Review: Caged Warrior by Lindsey Piper (Re-Post)

Caged Warrior: Leto Garnis and Audrey MacLaren

The Dragon Kings Series Book 1:

Caged Warrior (Dragon Kings, #1)

(How hot is this cover!?!)

Expected publication: June 25th 2013
Purchase on Amazon: Lindsey Piper - Caged Warrior: Dragon Kings Book One (The Dragon Kings)

Summary:
From Goodreads.com
The first installment in this fierce and sensual new paranormal romance series features demonic gladiators, ruthless mafia villains, and a proud race on the brink of extinction.

Ten years ago, Audrey MacLaren chose to marry her human lover, making her an exile from the Dragon Kings, an ancient race of demons once worshiped as earthly gods. Audrey and her husband managed to conceive, and their son is the first natural-born Dragon King in a generation—which makes him irresistible to the sadistic scientist whose mafia-funded technology allows demon procreation. In the year since her husband was murdered, Audrey and her little boy have endured hideous experiments.

Shackled with a collar and bound for life, Leto Garnis is a Cage warrior. Only through combat can Dragon Kings earn the privilege of conceiving children. Leto uses his superhuman speed and reflexes to secure the right for his two sisters to start families. After torture reveals Audrey’s astonishing pyrokenesis, she is sent to fight in the Cages. If she survives a year, she will be reunited with her son. Leto is charged with her training. Initially, he has no sympathy for her plight. But if natural conception is possible, what has he been fighting for? As enemies, sparring partners, lovers, and eventual allies, Leto and Audrey learn that in a violent underground world, love is the only prize worth winning.

Review:
*****WARNING I feel compelled to tell you all that this book does NOT actually contain dragon shifters. I know the name of the series is misleading. There are no actual dragons. THE dragon is their deity and what legends say created the dragon kings. I know this will disappoint some, but they still have cool powers. *****

This is a great new start to a new series. It is not for the faint of heart and is in no way fluffy, it is pretty dark but I like that. As far as the darkness goes, I think it would be comparable to Larissa Ione’s Demonica Series. There is a LOT of violence and mentions of other not so bueno things. Women are treated as men when it comes to violence and when there is violence are not excluded from some pretty brutal fights. They are warriors and just as tuff as the men. No quarter is given; this may not be for everyone but I think that those who don’t mind the dark will really enjoy this series.

The world building is decent, it is not the best that I have read but you get a pretty decent sense of this new world and there are some unanswered questions or maybe to be explained later questions?? Basically there is a race of beings that have extra powers, each clan has its own. The race is dying out and there have been no natural births since Audrey. Audrey and her son are kidnapped and held for testing by a brutal human mafia like syndicate. Audrey is forced to fight in the cages in order to free her son. Her “trainer” is Leto. Leto is in the cages by choice, he fights for his family.

Audrey is heartbreaking, she has had to endure so much. First with her clan rejecting her, then her husband brutally murdered with her subsequent capture with her son. Now she is thrown into the cages to fight, she has to learn to survive in fights in record time. Audrey is definitely no wilting flower, she does what she has to do to survive and she keeps on going. Her main thought to fight, to survive, and to rescue her son. Leto is the key to her survival, the king of the cages she needs him to teach her. What she never expected is to be so brutally attracted to someone she should loathe as their training intensifies so does their attraction.

Leto is brutal; it is the only way he knows how to be. There is no softness in him, until Audrey. Her inner strength calls to him and he finds himself wanting to protect her which is a foreign feeling. In the beginning I really thought I would HATE Leto, but somehow he won me over. Maybe it was his protective instincts or that he was willing to take Audrey’s hate to not only protect her body but her mind as well. He does his best to make sure Audrey survives so that she can get back to her son. Little by little he wins you over. Well at least he won me over.

Overall, I was intrigued and thoroughly engaged in this book from beginning to end. It is action packed and quite interesting. It’s is wonderfully different and sticks out from a crowd. I read this book maybe two months ago and I still remember it which for me and my lacking short term memory, says a lot. I read the first novella in this series and I do recommend that you read it as well before starting this one. It’s not required but the couple in the first series does have a pivotal roll in this book. I would recommend this new series to paranormal readers especially those who like a darker book.

Early Review: Base Instincts by Larissa Ione

Base Instincts by Larissa Ione

(Demonica, #11.7)

Base Instincts (Demonica, #11.7) (Lords of Deliverance, #6.7)

Summary:
From Goodreads.com

As a Seminus demon, Raze’s life literally depends on having sex with females. The problem is that he doesn’t desire females, and it’s physically impossible for him to be with males. Thankfully, he and his best friend, Fayle, have an arrangement that keeps him alive . . . if lonely. He finds some solace in his work as a medic at Thirst, a vampire club known for its rough clientele. But his carefully structured world turns upside down when he meets a mysterious male who makes him want what he can never have.

Slake is an assassin used to getting what he wants, and what he wants is Raze. But he also wants to earn back the soul he sold when he was a much different demon. All he has to do is capture a runaway succubus named Fayle and hand her over to her family. What he doesn’t count on is being caught himself by a web of lies—and his attraction to Raze.

Raze and Slake must navigate a dangerous world to be together. But as Fayle’s jealousy of their relationship turns deadly, they find themselves embroiled in a battle not only for their love, but their lives and souls.

Review:
I quite enjoyed this book. Im no M/M expert and I only really read it when I'm in the mood for something different but I love everything Larissa Ione writes and I'm definitely a fan girl of the demonica world, so when I saw this one I decided to give it a whirl.

It's a quick read maybe 150 pages and I got through it in one night. Slake and Raze are both anomalies for their species. Raze as a Sem demon can only ejaculate with women and gay men in Slake's species is unheard of. These two find each other in less than ideal circumstances. Slake is tracking Raze's roommate and partner for not just his job but for his soul as well. Falling for Raze is not in the cards but his desire is real and can't be denied.

It's interesting to see how these two play out. It should work, it should be impossible but in this world we've learned that nothing is impossible and what you think to be true is not always the truth. Both Slake and Raze learn this lesson in the book. I really enjoyed the characters, the emotion and the story. Ione always delivers and this is no exception. If Ione decides to write another M/M novel I'll snap that one up too.

Evernight by Kristen Callihan

Evernight: Will Thorne and Holly Evernight

The Darkest London Series: Book 5

Evernight (Darkest London, #5)

Summary:
From Goodreads.com
Once the night comes . . .

Love must cast aside the shadows . . .

Holly cannot fathom who would put a contract on her life, yet the moment she touches Will, the connection between them is elemental, undeniable—and she's the only one who can tame his bouts of madness. But other assassins are coming for Holly. Will must transform from killer to protector and find the man who wants Holly dead . . . or his only chance for redemption will be lost.

Review:
So this is not my favorite book of the series. I think that Callihan had a lot of room to really play with these characters; they had a lot of potential for some cool things. Although I liked the book, compared to previous books it just wasn’t as good and it left me feeling a bit flat. There weren’t as many twists and turns we expect from this series. Something else that I guess didn’t meet my expectations was Holly, I didn’t really feel like I truly knew her. I knew her on the surface, sure, but especially when it comes to her feelings towards Will. Will, I knew he was all in, it was felt throughout the book. His character was more developed and I did really enjoy Will.

Now, I don’t want you to think this book was bad because it wasn’t it definitely did have a good story and some good emotion especially after both Holly and Wills torture together in the previous book. There was some healing they both had to go through emotionally and of course you don’t have a Darkest London book without some intrigue. I just had such high expectations from this author and series. If you haven’t been reading this series, you should be. It’s a paranormal historical romance with a steampunk twist, so it’s definitely unique!

Review: Revenant by Larissa Ione

RevenantBlaspheme and Revenant

(Lords of Deliverance #6)

Revenant (Lords of Deliverance, #6; Demonica, #11)

Summary:
From Goodreads.com

HELL HATH NO FURY . . .

For five thousand years, Revenant believed he was alone in the world, a fallen angel beyond any redemption. Now he finds he has a twin brother who had all the light and love Revenant was denied. Caught in a tug of war between Heaven and Hell, he must weigh his thirst for revenge against his desire for a mysterious female named Blaspheme—a female whose very origins could deliver him into salvation . . . or destruction.

LIKE AN ANGEL SCORNED

Blaspheme has a deadly secret: she's the forbidden offspring of an angel and a fallen angel. Hunted by both heavenly and satanic forces, she has survived only by laying low and trusting no one. When Revenant claims he can save them both, how can she possibly believe him? But the powerful angel is persistence incarnate and for Blaspheme, there's no place she can hide in Heaven or Hell where he won't find her . .

Review:
Ok, it has been a while since I read this book so some of the details are fuzzy but the feeling of the book remains the same and it was AWESOME! Larissa Ione always weaves a fantastic tale; her world building is so rich and developed. Each book stacks onto the next creating a world so detailed you almost feel like you’re there. I’m a total Ione fan girl! She never disappoints and is one of the masters of the Paranormal Romance genre.

Blaspheme and Revenant meet in Reavers book before Revenant gets his memory book and being the asshole he is Revenant totally insults Blaspheme within 30 seconds but for some reason even then you kick up a corner of your mouth and know that Ione is starting her magic right then. She’s setting the stage for an epic romance and epic it turns out to be. At the end of REAVER, Revenant gets 3000 years of memories back and finds out he has a twin brother in Reaver and this is the beginning of an epic family feud.   REVENANT takes you on a journey through heaven and hell, literally; from the deepest depths of hell, to the heavenly skies. The story is as action packed as previous books with battles raging, backstabbing, reluctant alliances and torture. You definitely won’t get bored with this one.  Blaspheme and Revenant are one of those reluctant alliances; well at least Blaspheme is reluctant. In the beginning she wants nothing to do with Revenant, but it can’t be helped when she is cornered and Revenant saves her life. Blaspheme is posing as a false angel to hide her true identity but her façade is fading and fading fast and now her life is being threatened not just by heavenly angels but by demons from hell as well. Revenant is strong, one of the strongest beings on earth, heaven and hell. Few could best him and he is determined to protect Blaspheme, as he sees that as his way into her pants. Revenant is an ass, from beginning to end he remains true to form but he does soften towards Blaspheme. Blaspheme is a snarky bad ass from beginning to end. She doesn’t take Revenants shit and maybe that is the initial attraction, but soon their relationship deepens despite all the lies and half-truths from both of them. I loved both Blaspheme and Revenant; they have become one of my favorite couples of this series.  Get ready for some twists and turns and a couple of surprises. If you haven’t read this series… what are you waiting for? You need to start, from the beginning of the Demonica series. You wont regret it!

Review: Marked by Rebecca Zanetti

MarkedZane and Janie Kayrs

(Dark Protectors #7)

Marked (Dark Protectors, #7)

Summary:
Janie Kayrs has known Zane almost her whole life. He was her friend in the dream world. She trusted him. But that was before he kidnapped her, spiriting her away to an isolated cabin to learn what her dreams never told her. Like how dangerous he looks. How he got on the wrong side of the negotiating table. And how much sexier he is in real life…

Zane is a battle-hardened warrior, used to command and solitude. But Janie has drawn him from the minute they met. His need for her could destroy everything he’s worked for, but the risk is too sweet not to take it. They call her the Chosen One. But when it comes down to the questions of peace or war, life or death, safety or passion, it will be Janie who makes the choice…

Review:

For years we’ve been waiting for Janie and Zane’s story. We’ve been building up to it since Janie was four, we’ve been catching glimpses of them in Janie’s dream world and Zane even rescued her in a past book.  We have also been anticipating the big reveal on Janie’s role in saving the world, would it live up to the build up?

I loved loved loved the characters. Zane is all hard warrior and protector, but he has a secret, he’s a half breed and his other half is not an ally. He is convinced that no matter how much he wants Janie, he can’t have her not forever. Although, he’s stubborn and a warrior his will is no match for Janie’s. She knows Zane is hers and will be forever, she doesn’t care about the obstacles or his other half, and he is hers!  These two come together under difficult times but they preserver. I loved their story and how they come together for the good of their family and for themselves. Even when it seems like all odds are against them and there is no hope for them or anyone else they remain together as a solid team. I really enjoyed the story but where I had a problem with this book was the big reveal. Yes, Janie and Zane ended up saving their people but the how was a letdown. I can’t say what it is but come on… that was it? That was how they save the world.. whaawhaawaa

Review:

Magic Dreams by Ilona Andrews is a great novella in this series. I love, love it! I’ve read this book a few times. It’s a great look into Jim and Dali, it has been hinted at previous books a possible Jim and Dali paring but this seals the deal! Dali has been featured in previous Kate Daniels books but she doesn’t get much of a spotlight but this novella is all about Dali! She is quirky and fun, I love that she is half blind but still loves to race cars. She is intensely intelligent and fiercely protective of Jim. She has a mad crush on Jim which everyone seems to know but Jim. Jim. We’ve known since book one; we know he is mysterious and a protector and that does not change. In this book it’s a turn around, it’s Jim who is in danger and Dali who must be the one to save the day. We are taken through Asian culture and traditions with a Curse thrown in. This novella is short but it packs a punch!

Review:

So I’m writing my first review in many a months, so I may be a bit rusty so bear with me. I’m a huge fan of Kresley Cole and that is no secret. The Immortals After Dark series is my all-time favorite series and Dark Skye is although not my favorite book in the series it a great installment. Kresley Cole never fails to impress her characters are rich, full of life and funny. Her world building is some of the best; she creates a rich world called the Lore with all the crazy beings that belong in it. This book is rich in visits from other Lore beings, we get a broader scope of what the Lore is all about. We get visits from some old favorites and glimpses of stories to come. Nix of course plays a part in the books and will definitely drop some stuff on the reader, some things you don’t want to miss. We may or may not find something and her status may be upgraded. You’ll have to read to see.

Dark Skye is a long awaited installment within the IAD series. Fans of the series have been waiting years to get Lanthe and Thronos story; we first met these two in Sabine and Rydstroms story. Once childhood friends, chosen by fate, these two have a dark, blood soaked history. After the deaths of both of their parents Lanthe and Sabine went on the run and Thronos was compelled to hunt Lanthe. Tragedy after tragedy struck and these once best friends were bitter enemies. 500 years later they are both captured and held in a facility with other immortals, when all hell breaks loose Thronos finally has his shot at Lanthe, but fate has its own ideas.

Lanthe comes into her own in this book, while she’s always been a bit wild she has always been overshadowed by her powerful sister. Lanthe comes into her own badassness in this book. She is consistently in danger and she and Thronos are thrown into the unknown over and over. She finds her inner sorceress and strength as it turns out she can be a fierce! Thronos is an unexpected surprise! I wasn’t sure what to expect from him but I must say he ends up being one sexy, alpha, virgin male. Kresley Cole writes THE BEST male virgin characters, and I am a SUCKER for them. Thronos is just one more to add to this list. He may be inexperienced but he is creative and man oh man those wings! Just one more thing I am a sucker over. Cole throws these two into obstacle after obstacle but the biggest things these two must overcome are their pasts…

ARC Review: Rebecca Zanetti - Twisted

Dark Protectors Series:

Book 5.5:

Twisted: Terrent Vilks and Maggie

Twisted (Dark Protectors, #5.5)

Expected publication: June 20th 2013
Purchase on Amazon: Rebecca Zanetti - Twisted (Dark Protectors)

Summary:
From Goodreads.com
Maggie is a wolf shifter who was captured and experimented on by the Kurjans. Now that a cure has finally been found for shifters (although not for vampire mates or witches), she can concentrate on creating a new life for herself and finally accepting that her memories are gone forever. Most memories, that is. Sometimes in the hazy world between dreams and dawn, she hears a Scottish voice, dark and deep, that sounds suspiciously like wolf-shifter Terrent Vilks. A man she happened to anger by kidnapping a few years back. Hey, it was for a good cause.

Terrent Vilks knows more than he’s let on for the past several years. After digging for answers, he knows exactly why the demons want Maggie dead. And he remembers his past with Maggie…very well. She is finally where he wants her. Now all he has to do is discover what exactly the Kurjans did to her, beat the demons into so much submission they leave her alone, and get her to fall in love with him. Again. Good thing he’s used to wrangling monsters.

Review:
For 10 years Maggie has not been able to remember who she is, she was captured by the Kurjan and experimented on. For the past 10 years she has been basically on her own. For the past 5 she has been living and training with the vampires. Her path has crossed with Terrent a couple of times since moving to the vampire’s compound and each time they have met sparks have flown and not always the good kind. Terrent has wanted Maggie returned to the wolves, saying that she should be among her own kind. He even tried kidnapping her from the vampires, but now finally Maggie has left the compound and returned to the wolves. Maggie is there for a mission to discover who is tampering with the cure. Terrent doesn’t care why Maggie is there, all he cares about is making sure she doesn’t leave him….again….

From the previous books I had hoped that Maggie and Terrent would end up together, they had a strange sort of chemistry the few times they have met. Terrent is a definite Alpha male but on a few occasions he let Maggie get the upper hand on him. There is no mistaking after reading this book that he let Maggie, because this wolf is not like all of the others. He is in a league all on his own. We get to see a whole different side to Terrent, and I gotta say, I liked it! Maggie, I’ve always liked, and this book did not change that opinion. She is just as likeable in this book as she has in previous book. She has a mysterious background, seeing as she can’t remember anything and some of those gaps get filled in this book, but not all. I kind of liked that Zanetti doesn’t just give Maggie’s memory back with another bump on the head or it all come flooding back as soon as she seems something or someone from her past. This makes it a bit more realistic and keep the intrigue going.

From beginning to end this book is action packed. We start with an attack within the first few pages of this book, followed by a startling confession from Terrent. Terrent is determined to win Maggie and keep her safe, but the odds have not been in his favor. Almost from the moment she arrives chaos ensues. There is a team of assassins after Maggie, their mission, to drag Maggie back to their alpha to be his mate and Maggie is NOT having that nor is Terrent. Now that Maggie has come out of seclusion it seems like she has become a very popular girl on the block. Terrent realizes that he has very limited time to secure Maggie as his, but he is determined that his wait is over and it’s now or never. The heat between Terrent and Maggie is blazing hot. Their passion runs as hot in the bedroom as it does when they are fighting. These two know how to keep things exciting. When they are not fighting or loving they are actually a pretty good team, and work well together. But their goals are different, Terrent is determined to keep Maggie safe, but Maggie is determined to be a full partner. She is not a wolf that is just going to be left behind. For 10 years she has been living in a sort of limbo but she has decided memory or not, she is moving forward with her life with our without Terrent.

I truly enjoyed every minute of this book, my only complaint was that it was not long enough! I really wish Maggie and Terrent had gotten a full length book instead of a novella, but I’m just glad we got their story at all. It was well worth it. This series, while not one of my favorites is a very solid, good series that is definitely worth looking into if you haven’t already! I am looking forward to the future books.

After Celia Wird and her sisters help master vampire Misha save his family, their powers are exposed to the supernatural community of the Lake Tahoe region. But fame comes at a price, and being “weird” isn’t always welcome.

To make matters worse, Celia desires the love of Alpha werewolf Aric, but his pack is bent on destroying their relationship to preserve his pureblood status. And once weres start turning up dead—with evidence pointing to the vampires—she must face the prospect of losing Aric forever. But the chaos only masks a new threat. An evil known as the Tribe has risen—and their sights are set on Celia and her sisters.

Review:
This series has quickly become one of my favorites! It has everything you could want in a series, great action, humor, emotion and love. Although, the love part does not come easy for miss Celia as predator it takes a strong man to handle her. Now finally she thinks she has found a man that can be her everything in Aric, but fate may have other plans.

This book is more of an emotional journey for Celia then the previous book; she runs the full gauntlet of emotions causing the read to feel those emotions with her. I know I did, I even misted up a few times because the emotion was so strong. That is one thing you can count on with Cecy Robson she knows how to pull you in and make you feel what the characters feel. This book is in turn joyous and heartbreaking. For those action fans don’t you worry your pretty little heads, there is still plenty of action to be had as the sisters and the werewolves face their most lethal foe yet. This time they fear they may not all walk away as more and more lives are lost fighting demons that are set on extinguishing all supernatural races. For the first time all supernaturals will have to work together to protect not only their lives but to keep from going extinct.

This was one of my favorite books so far this year! Miss Robson can certainly spin a tale that will make you want to keep coming back for more. I know I can’t wait for the third book in this series, especially after that ending!

ARC Review: Jaime Rush - Dragon Mine

The Hidden Series:

Book 0.5:

Dragon Mine: Kirin and Elle

 Dragon Mine (The Hidden, #0.5)

Purchase on Amazon: Jaime Rush - Dragon Mine (A Hidden Novella)

Expected publication: June 4th 2013

Summary:
From Goodreads.com
His Dragon, her magick, a dark mystery, and hot sparks!

Kirin is summoned home to Miami when his father goes missing--the man who ruined his life, and his relationship with Elle, by being a suspect in her mother's disappearance. When he runs into Elle, sparks fly, especially when he discovers her father is missing, too. Suspecting that their disappearances are linked, they must combine his Dragon power and her magick to find the truth in the darkest shadows. But as their desires flare again, can their burning passion overcome their past—or the danger that the future holds?

Review:
So I picked up this book with high hopes because I love dragons! I mean what’s not to love about dragon shifters in the paranormal genre?! They are massive, scary yet beautiful, breathe fire and are seriously Alpha. So I am sad to report that this one just did not live up to my expectations. It was merely mediocre. I honestly don’t even remember all that much about it, I only read it about a week ago and I’ve already forgotten the characters names (good they are in the description) and mostly what it is about. I can’t even use the excuse that I’ve read a bunch of books since then, because I’ve only read one other book. That is how mediocre this book is. I can’t say it was bad, there was just not really anything that stuck out about it.

So from what I can remember Kirin is a dragon and after Elle basically blamed his father for killing her mother she booted him from her life. Kirin left and found a job a state over, but his dragon is suffering for leaving the magick of the area. There is absolutely no proof or even any really motive for Kirin’s dad to have killed Elle’s mom so even this plot line is a bit farfetched even for paranormal. When Kirins father disappears he is called back to Miami. As it turns out Elle’s dad has disappeared too (wow what a coincidence) and there is this magickly demon thingy that is trying to kill Kirin. Then the gods get involved and it becomes a weird competition?? I’m not really sure of the point of the gods, but whatev’s I just went with it. In the middle of all of this Kirin wants his woman back, he never wanted to leave her in the first place but she is determined to keep him at a arm’s length even though I didn’t think she had much basis to be all that mad at him in the first place. Her reasoning seemed more than a little bit dumb. Kirin was a pretty decent character but I never really grew a fondness for Elle. She keeps him at an arm’s length and then does a completely abrupt 180 and suddenly all is forgiven. It was all just very eh and not very realistic. Oh and the conversation at times felt so awkward and they talked like no real person ever would. And the clichés! Oh how I hate clichés and this book definitely had them.

It’s not likely I will continue with this series. I probably won’t even remember this book much past the posting of this review to even look for book 2.

Review: Ilona Andrews - Magic Strikes

Kate Daniels Series:

Book 3:

Magic Strikes: Kate Daniels

Magic Strikes (Kate Daniels, #3)

Purchase on Amazon:Ilona Andrews - Magic Strikes (Kate Daniels)

Summary:
From Goodreads.com
Investigator for the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid, Kate Daniels keeps humans safe in Atlanta. But when her werewolf friend Derek is dying in human form, from attack by the mysterious Reaper team at the Midnight Games, she and Curran, the Beast Lord, must fight together to win the Wolf Diamond topaz and save his Pack and her friends.

Review:
This is my favorite book of the series so far. In this book, one of Kates only friends is dying. Derek, who we have come to know and love, was in trouble when Kate had to rush in and rescue him from theft charge. Kate realizes Derek is in more trouble than he will admit too. When she next sees him, he is fighting for his life. A lethal team called the Reapers attacked Derek and basically tore him to shreds and now he is not healing. Kate doesn’t consider many friends, but Derek is towards the top of that list and she is willing to do anything to find and kill his attackers, including going against THE alpha, Curran. Kate and crew have three days to solve the mystery that are the Reapers, before Curran finds them and takes them off the case.

This assignment is personal to Kate and it shines through, now she is fighting for something more she is fighting for her friend. Kate is going to have to pull out everything if she is going to save Derek. She is going to do what she has been taught to NEVER do, she is going public. To get to the Reapers she will have to do something she never thought she would do again, fight in an area to the death. In this book, we find out more about Kate’s past and her lineage. Due to the nature of the fight she finds herself reflecting back more and more. Her past is both intriguing and heartbreaking.

This book is all about teamwork, because it is more than just Kate that wants revenge for Derek! Kate is going to have to pull in all of her friends if she is going to pull this one off. But they have to do it all while evading Curran which is no easy feat! The tension between Kate and Curran is at an all-time high with this book. He is carefully stalking his prey and trying to maneuver her where he wants her, in his bed! Kate is not cooperating and is ducking him at every turn. Kate has three days to evade Curran, find the Reapers weakness (as there appears to be none) and win the tournament and the Wolf Diamond all without getting herself or her crew killed. Kate can pack a lot in three days, but at the end of it she may lose her life at the worst or become the hunted at the least, but it is a risk she is willing to take.

Review: Ilona Andrews – Magic Burns

Kate Daniels Series:

Book 2:

Magic Burns: Kate Daniels

Magic Burns (Kate Daniels, #2)

Purchase on Amazon: Ilona Andrews - Magic Burns (KATE DANIELS)

Summary:
From Goodreads.com
Down in Atlanta, tempers – and temperatures – are about to flare…

As a mercenary who cleans up after magic gone wrong, Kate Daniels has seen her share of occupational hazards. Normally, waves of paranormal energy ebb and flow across Atlanta like a tide. But once every seven years, a flare comes, a time when magic runs rampant. Now Kate’s going to have to deal with problems on a much bigger scale: a divine one.

When Kate sets out to retrieve a set of stolen maps for the Pack, Atlanta’s paramilitary clan of shapeshifters, she quickly realizes much more at stake. During a flare, gods and goddesses can manifest – and battle for power. The stolen maps are only the opening gambit in an epic tug-of-war between two gods hoping for rebirth. And if Kate can’t stop the cataclysmic showdown, the city may not survive…

Review:
Since we got pretty much all of the world building out of the way in the first book, we are much more comfortable in this book. The terminology is now comfortable and understanding how this world works comes much easier to the reader.

This time around the magic is up more than tech, and the magically forces are going a bit nuts due to the impending flare (a time when the tech fails and magic is more powerful than ever). Kate is feeling all of the raw power, but she doesn’t have time to revel in it. People are disappearing and there is this strange bowman that keeps on stealing from the Pack. Our bowman, while his intensions are not very clear, is he friend or foe, he is actually quite charming and I find myself liking him despite we don’t know whose team he is playing on. Kate is her typical fierce self, she is settling into her new job, and somehow she has stumbled into something huge, could even involve vengeful gods. On top of missing people and a bowman popping in and out of her life, Kate now finds herself responsible for a young girl. Her mother is one of the missing people and Kate has been tasked with finding her. To defeat this mysterious foe and find the missing people Kate is going to need some help and it comes in the form of the shifters. So we get some more tension between Kate and Curran, plus our Derek and Jim fixes!

As with the first book, we find ourselves in a whole lot of action. Kate is on a whole other level with Atlanta steeped in magic, she is more powerful than she has ever been before and she is going to need all of it, to fight what is coming. What I have also come to enjoy about this series on top of the action and Kate fierce self is the mythology. Ilona Andrews pulls in a lot of mythology from all sorts of cultures into this series. In this book it is Celtic Mythology. I have always enjoyed mythology, so I am happy that it finds its way into this series. It’s not so much that it is like reading a mythology text book, but just enough that it is entertaining on top of a tiny bit educational. What I also like about the series is each book has a new villain to slay. So, the villain in this book is completely different from the first book. I get annoyed when we are fighting the same villain book after book. So I don’t have to worry about getting bored with this series! This book is more of what I was expecting when I picked up this series. It was a great, action packed, and entertaining read! I can’t wait for the next installment!

Review: Ilona Andrews - Magic Bites

Kate Daniels Series:

Book 1:

Magic Bites: Kate Daniels

Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1)

Purchase on Amazon: Ilona Andrews - Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, Book 1)

Summary:
From Goodreads.com
When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake.

Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up these magical problems. But when Kate's guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta's magic circles.

Pressured by both sides to find the killer, Kate realizes she's way out of her league—but she wouldn't have it any other way…

Review:
I’ve been meaning to get started on reading this series for it has to be around a year. I kept promising myself that I would clear a block of time to be able to get to this series and finally I found some time. So was the wait worth it? For the series as a whole, ABSOULTELY! While I am not quite finished with the series I am whipping through it reading the books back to back and I haven’t gotten sick of it yet!

This is the first book in the series and I have to say it’s not the best of the series, but thankfully I was warned that the first book is not the best so I wasn’t expecting it to the best book I ever read from the start. It has the potential to be up in the top of the series, but what’s holding it back is there is a LOT of world building in this book. It is absolutely necessary to the series, as this is a complex world and without taking the time to build the world the rest of the series probably wouldn’t be as good. There is a ton of new terminology and while the speicies are familiar to paranormal readers there are slight twists. Vampires are not your typical vampires, were’s where are basically the same, they have some differences. There are a lot of new magic’s and the world takes place in a basically ruin Atlanta. Throughout the day it will switch between “magic and tech” so when the magic is up technology doesn’t work and when the tech is up magic is not as influential. So, you have to get used to a lot of differences and at first it’s a lot to take in, but one you got it, it’s a lot smoother sailing.

The series as a whole and this book include is very violent. There is lots of action, blood and death. It is kind of like Jeaniene Frosts Night Huntress series, where action reigns supreme. Another similarity to Night Huntress would be our heroine. Kate like Cat is a kick ass female, she has a sword and she knows how to use it. She takes on all sorts of badies and keeps on kicking. I liked Kate from the get go, she is not whinny, insecure or immature. Her upbringing made sure of that. She knows what she is capable and doesn’t hesitate to do what needs to be done, plus she has a strict moral code that anyone would approve of.

Our villain is a read son of a *itch, almost impossible to kill and it wants Kate. Because of its killing spree, the Pack has become interested in taking out the villain which puts Kate in the path of the Lord Beast, Curran. Kate and Curran do not get off to a good start, but there is the makings of something there. Overall, this book was entertaining with lots of potential, while not the best of the series it is a good start. I highly recommend getting through the first book and continuing on with the series. I promise it gets better!

Review: Keri Lake - Soul Avenged

Sons of Wrath:

Book 1:

Soul Avenged: Ayden and Kane Walker

Soul Avenged (Sons of Wrath, #1)

Purchase on Amazon: Keri Lake - Soul Avenged (Sons of Wrath, #1)
Summary:
From Goodreads.com
Passion is blind in vengeance and love ...

Ayden’s suburban home was invaded by a pack of Lycans.

The brutal attack is the only memory she carries of her former life.

Now, one motive burns in her soul:

KILL THEM ALL.

The Sons of Wrath—a brood of vengeance-dealing warrior demons—band with Ayden to hunt the Lycans on Detroit’s most deadly feeding grounds.

Kane Walker should’ve been her easiest kill.

Unfortunately, the newly bitten Lycan has something she wants—clues that may finally lay her past to rest. To reach them, she must be willing to submit to the sensual pleasures awakened by his touch.

Time is running out.

In seven days, Kane will become what Ayden despises most. She can halt his transformation but the antidote requires the ultimate sacrifice. As the beast takes hold, Kane becomes more of a threat.

Ayden must choose between her lust for revenge, or surrender to her enemy and discover a horrible truth.

Sons of Wrath:
Never gamble with vengeance

Review:
This was such a great take on werewolves, and the havoc they wreak on the families of Detroit. Ayden’s family was one of those families, except she cannot remember any of it. In this world the Lycan’s are the bad guys and what Ayden is (an Alexi) are the goodish guys, kinda. In this world the lines between good and evil are blurred. Are all Lycans bad? Are the Alexi, good? The Wrath brothers are the good or evil? I like that the lined are blurred and what you think you know, you may not actually know. It keeps things interesting. This book was both interesting and entertaining.

There a lot of different characters in this book, with Ayden as our heroine. She is a total bad a$$, training to feel nothing and remembers nothing before her attack, this makes her a more efficient killer.  She seeks only vengeance for her death.  Ayden doesn’t think that she cares that she cannot remember anything beyond avenging her own murder, until she does. That’s where Kane comes in. He’s just an innocent victim, bitten and left suffering, when Ayden found him. With one touch to Kane, she sees something, her past, or is it hers? Confusion reigns but she feels compelled to figure it out, so she takes the new Lycan to the Wrath bros estate.

Throughout the book, Ayden evolves, she becomes more than a hate filled female. She learns that not every Lycan is a killing machine, she learns that maybe there is something to remembering. Because of Kane, she realizes that there is more than just killing Lycan after Lycan. I like Aydens growth and how she softens throughout the book, but never loses her bad a$$ness. Kane is easy to love, throughout the entire book. He is resigned to his fate, but that does not make him a pushover. He realizes he is going to die and by Ayden’s hand, but more then he wants to live he doesn’t want to become a mindless killer. Little by little he shows Ayden humanity at its best and as she learns their feelings grow, but time is running out.

Throughout the entire book we are kept entertained, there is tons of action from the first few pages until the very end. The concept alone is enough to keep you reading. It’s a great spin on an old theme. The Alexi is a new twist to the Lycan tale. On top of the story all of the characters are enjoyable and you want to learn more about them. The Wrath brothers being some of the most interesting; each brother has his own personality and strengths and weaknesses. I enjoyed each and every one of them. I am looking forward to reading more about the Wrath brothers and their futures. I am also looking forward to more of Ayden and Kane, because something tells me, they are not going anywhere and we will continue seeing them in future books. I know I will be continuing with this series.
